SOCIAL CONFIDENCE |
| Inherently a reserved dog, the Rhodesian Ridgeback prefers to interact only with his owner, family, and close friends. However, social flexibility is required if he is to be a successful companion in society today. The Rhodesian Ridgeback makes this adjustment well, but it is essential that he is included in the everyday life of his owner. Take your young puppy out regularly offering him a variety of sights, sounds, and experiences. Ideally, once a day, but a minimum of three times weekly. A youngster should initially be taken to puppy school where he can interact with other puppies his own age, and to be touched and handled by the people participating in the class. This can be extended to the various activities offered by dog training clubs, as pups progress through to the adolescent stage. This quality time is important, but equally important is simply time spent with your Ridgeback. He values your company. Teach him to play with you, and provide regular contact with good-natured dogs - other than the ones he lives with. |

ADOLESCENCE |
The transition through adolescence to maturity is not always smooth. He may display some stubbornness or anxiety towards situations that he was previously comfortable with. With the breed characteristics in mind he must also be read as an individual. The adolescent Rhodesian Ridgeback may fear that he is not in control of his world and may try to solve his own problems. When things don't go as you would like, do not show irritation and anger. Do not reassure the anxious dog. If you cannot trust yourself to be neutral or upbeat about the off days, don't react at all. Continue to expose your Rhodesian Ridgeback gradually to the cause of his anxiety, however he must feel safe and that you are in control. Make sure you notice success no matter how small and react positively when this happens. Some Rhodesian Ridgebacks during this stage of development may feel overwhelmed amongst strangers, so try to protect his personal space to help him adjust. |
TRAINING AND CONTROL |
![]() |
The Rhodesian Ridgeback is a devoted companion and family dog. He is also whip smart and can out manipulate and out think the inexperienced dog owner. For this reason he is not the ideal dog for every family, however, for the committed new owner he is well worth learning about. He is a sensitive dog and does not respond to heavy handed training methods. Superior intelligence will gain his respect. Teach him what you require, firmly but kindly, keeping commands simple and brief. He does not follow commands slavishly, so set yourself up to follow through if you are ignored. If you are not consistent your Ridgeback's response wont be either. A reliable recall is essential, therefore, limit him to a long training line until consistency is obtained. In times of high stimulation such as livestock and the presence of uncontrolled dogs, instinct may compete with learned behaviour, so yes enjoy exercising your Ridgeback but keep your eyes open and intervene early. The time you put into teaching your young Ridgeback will result in good habits for his lifetime. |
SHOWING YOUR RHODESIAN RIDGEBACK |
Showing is an aspect of competitive dog sport that is enjoyable and relaxing for you and your Rhodesian Ridgeback. He is not a natural show-off but can be persuaded that it is fun to be in the show ring with his owner. Do not expect too much too soon. It does not matter if he wants to leap about and carry the lead in his mouth for he will settle as he matures. Keep training sessions for the show ring short. As a large dog he will not mature physically and mentally until at least two years old. Foster his enjoyment at spending a day at the shows with you and the time will come when you can be justifiably proud of your handsome dignified show dog as he gains maturity. Allow plenty of time so you are prepared, and stay calm. Your Rhodesian Ridgeback will pick up very quickly any sign of nerves! Enjoy! |
