A SHORT HISTORY OF NAMBALA KENNELS AND OTHERS ASSOCIATED WITH US

Rachel Janes & Carol Elgie are co-breeders under the Nambala prefix.

Rachel lives in the North Island along with close friend Damian Nunns, 'a number' of RRs, Australian King Parrot, Yellow Nape Amazon Parrot, a variety of tropical fish, chickens, sheep, and a couple of horses. Nambala's foundation bitch was locally bred Ch Serena of Bindura and the first registered litter bearing the Nambala prefix arrived on 20 September 1988 - sired by NZ Ch Bulawayo William from Nina Bieberitz's Australian Kennel. A boy from this mating Ch Nambala Alkari was awarded Best in Show at the 3rd Rhodesian Ridgeback Championship Show and Runner up Best in Show at one of the larger Allbreeds Championship Shows in New Zealand - the first RR to achieve an award at this level in New Zealand. About the same time as this first mating, Nkazimlo Umhle was imported from Sue Temlett of Australia (formerly Sth Africa) - this girl became the first Rhodesian Ridgeback to become a dual NZ & Australian Champion, the first to be awarded Best in Show at an Allbreeds Championship Show in New Zealand and her son, Ch Nambala Gboko, became the second. Added to this gene pool was Eng & NZ Ch Iannto of Janak from the Webster's English kennels. Together they and their progeny produced 19 litters for Nambala with 34 Nambala RRs gaining their NZ Championship titles so far. Many of them have been presented top awards at RR Champ shows, Hound Champ Shows and Allbreed Championship Shows - too many to list individually. Nambala Nkazimlo Pride was sent to Sue Temlett in Australia, she gained her Australian Grand Championship title with many group wins on the way - this made her the first NZ Bred dog to become a Grand Champion. Recently Nambala Qam of Savannah was sent to Mary Joshua-Nugent of Netherlands.

Carol is based in the South Island and shares her life with husband Tony, multiple RRs, a collection of goats and an elderly cat. In 1987 she obtained her first RR from a local breeder - Ch Freya of Rajobe. This bitch was never bred from and Carol purchased a boy, Ch Nambala Dandoola - a consistent breed and group winner right up to his retirement at 9 years of age, a bitch Ch Nambala Karama and another girl based on Nambala lines Ch Maini N'Bala of Gwanda. The latter was the first brown-nosed RR to be awarded multiple allbreed group awards along with a Best in Show at the RR Champ show judged by Lesley Alvin of Australia. She joined Rachel as a co-breeder in 1998 and bred her first litter on 6 September 2000.

The following 2 kennels are ones that have a very close association with Nambala, which is why the progeny all carry 'N'Bala' in their name so people will be aware of the connection:

Gwanda Kennels - Kerre McKinley & Rachel Janes

Kerre, Tony and Shannon with Ria and Sari
Kerre moved back to NZ from Australia with her bitch Invierno Cobritza based on Jomeja lines and together Kerre and Rachel produced 4 litters. From the first mating sired by NZ Ch Bulawayo William (Aust) 3 champions were produced with the most successful being Ch Jambu N'Bala of Gwanda. She was awarded 3 Best in Shows under Barbara Sawyer-Brown (USA), Elina Haapeniemi (Finland) and Elizabeth Webster (England) along with Runner up Best in Show by Rodney Leys (Aust) at RR Champ Shows in NZ - no other RR has achieved this level of success at Specialty shows in NZ. When we bred this girl to Ch Nambala Ewondo, Ch Maini N'Bala of Gwanda was produced (see above).

Sarabi Kennels - Eric & Kathryn Dodds

Eric & Kathryn agreed to have a litter of puppies from their girl Champion Nambala Elmina and we chose our boy NZ Ch Bulawayo William (Aust) to be the sire. This proved to be very successful with the 'star' of the litter being Ch Haarlem N'Bala of Sarabi, who, superbly handled by Damian Nunns has become the first RR to win Best in Show in both a Rhodesian Ridgeback Speciality and an Allbreed Championship Show in New Zealand - Best in Show at the RR Champ Show under Dawn Corker (Aust) and Best in Show at an Allbreeds Champ Show under a Canadian judge. He is now 7 years old and still active in the show ring with Group Awards still coming his way.

Foundation Stock

Nambala provided the foundation bitches for 2 more kennels in New Zealand, Joan Gray's Shamva Kennels and Jenny Sutherland's Mitumba Kennels.
